The President of the International Handball Federation (IHF), Dr. Hassan Moustafa, inaugurated this evening, Tuesday, November 7, 2023, the “Super Globe 2023”, which is hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the 4th consecutive year. The tournament is being held at Ministry of Sport Hall in Dammam, from 07 to 12 November 2023, with the participation of 12 teams.
The opening ceremony, which was attended by many international sports figures, included impressive artistic performances that were interacted with by a large audience.
The President of the Saudi Arabian Handball Federation (SAHF), Mr. Fadel bin Ali Al-Nemr, welcomed the teams taking part in the tournament and the fans, saying: “The world’s eyes are turning to the home of sports within the series of tournaments that embody the continued generous support from our leadership, and the support of the inspiring leader and the architect of the Kingdom’s dazzling future is His Royal Highness the Crown Prince.
"The globe is eyeing on the home of sports through a sequence of competitions that represent the unwavering support of our leadership, as well as the backing of the visionary leader and architect of the Kingdom's brilliant future, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince,” said Mr. Fadel bin Ali Al-Nemr, President of the Saudi Arabian Handball Federation (SAHF), in a message to the participating teams and fans.
He added that his tournament is another one that promises a great deal of excitement and fair competition, and it reinforces the Kingdom's remarkable qualities in organizing major events, which have made it a popular travel destination for sports enthusiasts worldwide. He pointed out that this competition will pave the way for the hosting of the biggest international competitions soon, wishing every participating team the best of luck, particularly the Saudi representatives, Al-Khaleej and Al-Noor.
At the end of the ceremony, Dr. Hassan Moustafa and Mr. Fadel Al-Nemr, honored the former president of the Saudi and Arab Handball Federations, Mr. Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Matrood for his previous achievements during his presidency of the federations.
In the first day's matches the "host" team, Al-Khaleej lost to the "defending champions", the German side Magdeburg, in the match that was held immediately after the opening ceremony, with a score of (20-29) in the third group competitions. The other Saudi side the Al-Noor lost by a difference of 18 goals, with a score of (20-38) against its opponent Egyptian team Al-Ahly, in the first group. In the fourth group competitions, the Polish side Kielce defeated the Bahraini Al-Najma by a single goal difference with a score of (27-26), in the first match of the tournament, while Kuwait SC won against San Fernando team with a 12-goal difference (41-29), in the second group.
The second day of the tournament contests will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, with four matches. At 12:15 p.m., the American team Cal Heat will take on the Bahraini side Al-Najma, and at 2:30 p.m., the German club Berlin will play the Argentinian side San Fernando. At 4:45 p.m., Al-Noor will play the Spanish club Barcelona; and at 7:00 p.m., Al-Khaleej will play the Australian University of Queensland to wrap out Wednesday’s matches.
