On behalf of His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, Minister of Sports and President of the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee, His Excellency the Deputy Minister of Sports, Mr. Badr bin Abdulrahman Al-Qadi, inaugurated today, Tuesday, the World Club Handball Championship “Super Globe 2021”, which is organized by the Ministry of Sports in cooperation with the Saudi Arabian Handball Federation from 5-9 October, at King Abdullah Sports City Hall.
The opening ceremony, which was attended by Dr. Hassan Mustafa, President of the International Handball Federation, and a number of deputy ministers, and Mr. Fadel Al-Nimr, President of the Saudi Handball Federation, in addition to a number of federations presidents for the participating teams’ countries, witnessed the passing of the teams and their representatives, then a video laser show that included the names of the teams, a number of various shows that accompanied the ceremony.
His Excellency the Deputy Minister of Sports, Badr Al-Qadi, said in a press statement on this occasion: "Today, we are pleased to host the World Club Handball Championship "Super Globe 2021" for the second time in a row, which comes as an extension of a number of distinguished international sporting events that our country had the honor of hosting during the last period of time under the light of the unlimited support that the sports sector enjoys from our wise leadership - may God protect it - and the follow-up and interest of His Highness the Minister of Sports Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, to achieve, with God willing, the objectives of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, and to activate the quality programs and initiatives that fall under the Quality of Life Program”.
His Excellency added: "I welcome all the teams participating in this global event in their second country, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and I wish them every success in presenting wonderful sports competitions that reflect the great development of the handball game worldwide."
It is noteworthy that this tournament will be played in a knockout system, with the participation of 10 clubs from different countries of the world, led by the representatives of the Kingdom, as “host country” teams Al-Noor and Al -Wehda, in addition to the Qatari Al-Duhail, Danish Aalborg, Australian Sydney University, Cal Heat San Francisco, Brazilian Pinherios, Egyptian Zamalek, Spanish FC Barcelona, and German SC Magdeburg.
The first day witnessed the German team SC Magdeburg qualification for the quarter-finals after defeating the Australian Sydney University team 32-20, while the representative of the country, "Al-Wehda" qualified for the same round after defeating Cal Heat San Francisco 29-20
Tomorrow, Wednesday, the quarter-final matches will be played with 4 confrontations, where Al-Duhail Qatari Club will face its German counterpart SC Magdeburg at 01:15. In the second meeting, the representative of the country, "Al-Nour", will face his Brazilian counterpart Pinheiros, while the Saudi Al-Wehda will face the German SC Magdeburg, and at the end of the day Egyptian Zamalek faces the champion of the previous edition, FC Barcelona, at half past eight.
